Articles (a, an, the)

Articles may be different or pronounced differently depending on the noun after them. If the article is before a consonant sound « a » is used and « the » is pronounced /ðə/.

⚠️Some words can start with a vowel but not a vowel sound. For example : university /’juːnəvɜːrs/ ( /j/ is the sound found at the beginning of « yellow » )

if the article is before a vowel sound (short and long vowels + diphthongs, see phonetic alphabet) then « an » is used and « the » is pronounced /ði:/.
