Vowels can be defined with three different criteria:
OPENNESS – how much the mouth is open
PLACE – where the sound is realized, in the back of the throat or in the front near the lips
ROUNDNESS – how rounded the lips are
We use a trapezoid to represent the openness and the place of articulation and different colors for the roundness.
